American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)  The national organization for podiatrists in the United States, and the largest podiatric medical organization.

Board Certification Organizations

American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS)  The first of two certification boards recognized by the APMA.  This is the body that certifies practitioners in foot and ankle surgery.   

American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM) The second of the two certification boards recognized by the APMA.  This is the body that certifies practitioners in fields of foot function, trauma, and the general medicine as it relates to the foot.

 

 

Podiatric Specialties

American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS)   The ACFAS is a professional educational and research organization which promotes understanding of the services provided by podiatrists who devote most of their practice to foot and ankle surgery.  Fellows in this organization are board certified by the ABPS. 

American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine (ACFAOM) ACFAOM is an educational and research organization which promotes understanding of the valuable services rendered by podiatrists who devote most of their practice to podiatric orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine. 

American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM)  AAPSM is a podiatric research and education organization interested in sports medicine.

American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine    If you're interested in a career in podiatric medicine, or if you just want to know more about the schools that teach it, then this site is for you.  There are just seven schools of podiatric medicine in North America.  The schools are located in New York City, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, Des Moines (Iowa), Miami and Oakland.  Each school is discussed below.  

  • Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science   The alma mater of one out of every three podiatric physicians practicing today (including Dr. Schumacher), Scholl College was founded in 1912 as as an independent institution and has been located in the wonderful Gold Coast area for some ninety years.  Recently, however, Scholl College joined with other independent health institutions in the Chicago area to form a unique health-related graduate-level university named Rosalind Franklin University.  Now located in North Chicago, this unique institution is completely devoted to graduate-level degrees in the health sciences.  The other colleges within Rosalind Franklin University are The Chicago Medical School, (which like Scholl College also began as an independent medical institution in 1912), The School of Related Health Sciences, which offers graduate degrees in clinical laboratory sciences, nutrition, physical therapy, and physician assistant practice, and The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, which offers post-graduate degrees in the following disciplines (the type of degree offered follows the field:  Applied Physiology, (M.S.), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, (M.S., Ph.D.), Cell Biology and Anatomy, (M.S., Ph.D.), Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, (M.S., Ph.D.), Clinical Immunology, (M.S.), Clinical Psychology, (M.S., Ph.D.) Medical Radiation Physics, (M.S., Ph.D.) ,Medical Imaging Sciences, (M.S.), Microbiology and Immunology, (M.S., Ph.D.), Molecular and Cellular Sciences (Ph.D.), Neuroscience, (M.S., Ph.D.), Pathology, (M.S., Ph.D.), Physiology and Biophysics, (M.S., Ph.D.).   Scholl College has major affiliations with the enormous Cook County Hospital, (one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the world), Mount Sinai Hospital, North Chicago VA Hospital, Lutheran General Hospital and Christ Hospital.  

  • Temple University School of  Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM)  Formerly the Philadelphia College of Podiatric Medicine, the school is now part of Temple University in Philadelphia.   Clinical training at TUSPM occurs at the school's Foot and Ankle Institute, and Temple University's vast network of facilities, including Temple University's main teaching hospital--Temple University Hospital--a 514-bed facility serving over 20,000 inpatients and 150,000 outpatients annually.  

  • New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM)     The first, largest, and oldest of the seven U.S. schools of podiatric medicine, more than 25% of all podiatrists practicing today graduated from NYCPM.  Located in Manhattan, New York City,  NYCPM and its "Foot Clinics of New York", (which alone sees 50,000 patient visits annually), is integrated with Columbia University Hospital system and the massive New York-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) system of 27 hospitals, 6 skilled nursing facilities, 11 home-health agencies, 78 ambulatory-care centers and 3 specialty institutes, which together serve more than 20 percent of the New York metropolitan population.

  • Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM)   Located in Cleveland, Ohio, OCPM provides patient care through its own Cleveland Foot and Ankle Clinic, the newly-constructed Carnegie Surgery Center and satellite clinics.  OCPM is also affiliated with Huron Road Hospital, Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Richmond Heights General Hospital, Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital, Hillcrest Hospital, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Suburban Community Hospital.  An additional 45 hospitals provide externship training to OCPM students.

  • College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (CPMS) of Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center  Located in Des Moines, Iowa, this is the only podiatry school affiliated with an osteopathic medical school. Most clinical training is done at the University's Tower Medical Center, the Des Moines Veterans Administration Medical Center, Broadlawns Medical Center and rural community hospital-based clinics. 

  • The California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt College  An independent college since 1914, the California College of Podiatric Medicine has now merged with Samuel Merritt College in Oakland.  Specializing in health care training, Samuel Merritt is now the home to the only podiatric medical school in the western half of the United States.  The college is affiliated with Sutter Health, including Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.  

  • Barry University--School of Graduate Medical Sciences--Podiatric Medicine And Surgery Program (BUSGMS)  Located in Miami, Florida, BUSGMS is the only podiatric medical school in the entire southern United States.  It is also the newest and one of the smallest podiatric medical schools.  Hospital rotations are delivered through a large number of Florida-area hospitals.
